When Dr Tim Williams, PhD ’86, visited the Yunnan province in China with his wife and son earlier this year he took some souvenir photos of the trip.

Now he’s in the running to be crowned the first winner of the ANU Reporter Photography Awards.

The family visited Yunnan a few years ago but found their trip was halted slightly because they “were not able to ‘tour’ very freely”, according to Tim.

“This time we planned on about 10 days in Yunnan and getting about by rental car (a fairly recent thing in China),” Tim says.

“The main sights that we wanted to spend time enjoying were the world-famous terraced fields in Yuanyang county (and more generally the Honghe, Red River area) and the very southern area known as Xishuangbanna, bordering Laos.

“We have hobby interests in gardening and botany and were keen to see the famous and extensive parks and botanical gardens in that area.

“Many of the Western world’s garden and house plants are found in this semitropical region of China. We stayed in Jinghong, the capital of Xishuangbanna, for about a week and really enjoyed the rural, relaxed atmosphere.”

Tim’s photos are among some of the entries received in the ANU Reporter Photography Awards.
