All that arises

Lao-Australian artist Savanhdary Vongpoothorn’s paintings weave together language and Buddhist tradition across cultural boundaries. Joanne Leong reports.

On a 17-metre long grid of handmade paper, the ink rubbings of Footsteps to the Nigatsu-do – Savanhdary Vongpoothorn’s collaboration with the Japanese poet Noriko Tanaka – blossom into misty patterns: curling foliage, flowing waters and the infinite Net of Indra that represents the interconnectedness of the Buddhist cosmos.
