The year 2015 marked the 75th anniversary of Australian diplomatic representation in Washington.
Australia Goes to Washington: 75 years of Australian Representation in the United States, 1940–2015 brings together expert analyses of those who have served as heads of mission and the challenges they have faced.
It examines the strengthening relationship, crises and changing priorities as experienced by Australia’s Ambassadors and leading diplomats in Washington during this period, and the influence they had on the development and implementation of Australian foreign policy.
Edited by three of Australia’s leading historians, David Lowe, Carl Bridge and David Lee, it concludes with an insightful paper by Australia’s recently returned Ambassador to the United States, the Hon Kim Beazley AC.
The book provides an appreciation of the importance of the embassy and the head of mission in Washington in mediating the relationship between Australia and the United States and of their role in managing expectations in Canberra and Washington.
