Closing gaps or improving health?

There is a clear need to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who experience a disproportionate and inequitable burden of ill health, stemming from Australia’s history of colonisation.

In 2008 all levels of government committed to working together to ‘close the gap in Indigenous disadvantage’. The Council of Australian Governments set targets to guide and measure progress in ‘Closing the Gap’ between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population and non-Indigenous population.
