On the love of beautiful things
Dr Robert Wellington, Lecturer in Art History and Art Theory, was chosen to deliver the 2017 Last Lecture.
The event is not a University award decided by a committee – students decide whom they would like to hear speaking at a 'red velvet' event in October, as a symbolic end to the academic year.
Here is an edited extract of Dr Wellington’s lecture.
Art historians often face a paradox of beauty: To call something beautiful is not a critical assertion, so it’s deemed of little value to an argument that attempts to understand the morals, politics and ideals of human cultures past and present.
