The sound of silence

Why does ANU have a research station and staff in the middle of the Australian desert, and what does it have to do with nuclear weapons?

Tabitha Carvan travelled to the Northern Territory to discover that if you want to hear something very loud – nuclear explosion loud – you have to go somewhere very, very quiet.

“Is there much traffic in Canberra?” Sam asks.

We are standing on red, dusty ground, watching the sun rise. We can see nothing but termite mounds, scrubby bushes and towering stacks of red boulders, glowing redder in the dawn.
