The value of diversity
A three-minute video address to his workforce in the wake of a particular instance of poor behaviour in the Australian Army thrust Lieutenant-General DAVID MORRISON AM (Retd), BA '79 into the national media spotlight in 2013.
As Chief of Army, the message about unacceptable behaviour hit hard and has since had more than 1.6 million YouTube views.
It was a highlight in a glittering 36-year Army career, during which Morrison saw operational service in Bougainville and East Timor and led troops from platoon level all the way up to three-star General.
Since retiring, Morrison has become a champion for diversity in workplaces and has spoken at the United Nations International Women's Day Conference in New York and the Global Summit to Prevent Sexual Violence in Military Conflict in London in 2014.
The Australian Financial Review named Morrison as one of Australia's leading influences on culture in 2014 and the following year he was appointed Chair of Diversity Council Australia.
Now 2016 Australian of the Year and 2016 ANU Alumnus of the Year, Morrison returned to his former University to deliver the keynote speech at the inaugural ANU Commencement Address.
Below is an extract of his speech and you can watch the full Commencement Address at the bottom of this page.
