Weatherboard and iron

Word watch

When Barnaby Joyce resigned as deputy Prime Minister in February 2018, people listening to his speech reported their bemusement at a term he used, as Australian National Dictionary editor Dr Amanda Laugesen, BA (Hons) ’97, PhD ’01 explains.

Joyce said he would continue to fight for the ‘people in the weatherboard and iron’. Many listeners misheard this as the ‘people in the weatherboard nine’. Social media quickly put out a number of memes and jokes about this mysterious ‘weatherboard nine’.
