Professor Creina Day’s research in macroeconomics and innovative teaching approach transcends the lecture theatres – her impact endures long after the class is over.

Here’s the thing about a good teacher – you never forget them.

Whether their way of translating complex topics into something tangible, their innate ability to inspire, or their generosity in instilling  with confidence when you needed it most – their wisdom reaches far beyond the walls of a classroom.

Creina Day is one of these teachers. A Professor of Economics from the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy, Day seamlessly balances rigorous research in macroeconomics with an unwavering commitment to teaching excellence – sparking economic curiosity in future generations.

“Teaching became a passion when I understood the transformative impact it could have on students,” says Day.

“Watching students shift from feeling intimidated by economics to actively engaging with the subject is incredibly rewarding.

“I enjoy designing courses that make complex ideas accessible and relevant, supporting student engagement and confidence. Higher education is about fostering curiosity, building analytical skills, and equipping students with the tools to think critically. That realisation continues to drive my approach to teaching postgraduate macroeconomics.”

It’s this passion that has earnt Day a citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the prestigious Australian Awards for University Teaching. The honour recognises the pinnacle of teaching and educational leadership across the country.

But for Day, the impact of the achievement extends far beyond the good feelings that come with knowing you hard work is recognised.

“Recognition of teaching excellence transcends personal achievement – it highlights the importance of quality education and the collective effort that goes into improving student learning,” says Day.

“Awards provide an opportunity to reflect on what works in education, share best practices and inspire others. More importantly, they reinforce my commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in teaching.”

Part of what makes Day’s teaching approach so effective is the way she uses using economic models to explain contemporary challenges. Her approach emphasises relevance, research-led curricula and reflective practice – principles that not only enhance student understanding but also inspire future generations of economists.

“I also integrate diverse perspectives and foster interdisciplinary connections to ensure students see the broad applicability of economic theory.”

It’s an approach that has really made a difference to her students in Macroeconomic Analysis and Policy and Open Economy Macroeconomics Finance and Development.

“One moment that stands out is a student who initially lacked confidence in economics but later told me that my course changed their entire perspective, inspiring them to pursue further study in the field,” Day says.

While she has inspired plenty of future economists, Day also acknowledges the people who have helped to shape her own path.

“Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have mentors who encouraged innovative teaching approaches, and I continue to learn from fellow leaders of change across disciplines in higher education.”

As for the future of her teaching career? Day says she is always learning. A mindset she would encourage others to embrace too.

“The best teachers engage with new technologies, diverse perspectives, and research-led approaches,” says Day.

“Higher education is about supporting, challenging and inspiring students.

“Build connections, embrace innovation, and remain a lifelong learner – great teaching evolves with commitment, time and experience.”
