The Australian National University (ANU) is today publicly releasing the Self Assurance Report completed for the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).
ANU submitted the report to the regulator on 19 August 2025 as the first step in TEQSA’s current compliance assessment under section 59 of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011 (TEQSA Act).
The report details the many factors that led to the University’s financial position, including the COVID-19 pandemic, hailstorm, a growth in expenses not matched by a planned growth in sustainable revenue, and changes in government policies, among others.
It also demonstrates how the University monitors, manages and mitigates institutional risks.
ANU Vice-Chancellor and President, Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell, said ANU was pleased to make the report publicly available to continue the culture of transparency and accountability at the University.
“The report makes clear that we’re on a journey and that we still have much work to do in the areas of risk management, governance and culture,” Professor Bell said.
“We recognise that ANU is at a critical point in its history – one where we need to reset not only our finances but also our operating and structural model.
“We don’t undertake these changes lightly, and we’re endeavouring to enact them in a manner consistent with our own Enterprise Agreement, as agreed with the National Tertiary Education Union, and best practices in terms of managing psycho-social hazards and risks.
“We know that these changes haven’t been easy for many in our community, but they are necessary. The path we’re on ensures that the ANU can continue to deliver its obligations far into the future.”
ANU looks forward to cooperating with TEQSA on the remaining compliance assessment requirements.
