Dr James Gilbert is a lead engineer at the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

He is a space instrumentation engineer with a PhD in astrophysics, and an active researcher with a background in electronics, optical systems (telescopes, cameras, infrared spectrographs) and scientific space payload design. He currently leads a team of engineers and scientists developing new astronomy and space instruments at ANU.

Dr Gilbert has media experience as an interviewee and presenter, including appearances on TV documentaries and news segments.

He has a passion for public engagement in engineering and space science, particularly where new technologies and research will benefit humanity. For example, the astronomy technology developed by his team has also enabled other applications in Earth observation from space.
