Professor John McCarthy is a Lecturer and Researcher at the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy.

He is also on the board of the ANU Indonesia Institute and a member of the ANU Institute for Climate Energy and Disaster Solutions.

Professor McCarthy is an expert on rural development and resource policy in Southeast Asia. He works on problems of environmental decline and deforestation, rural underdevelopment, and livelihood insecurity in the global south are acute world problems.

His research, centering on the critical case of Indonesia and, has engaged with major emerging issues regarding smallholder development, the oil palm boom, and the persistence of food poverty in middle-income Indonesia. He has also worked extensively on governance issues associated with forestry and land issues in Indonesia.
