Noam Maitless is an Associate Professor in the ANU School of Engineering.

Associate Professor Maitless is a practicing architect, urban strategist, bringing nearly 30 years of international experience across architecture, urban design, infrastructure, policy and governance. He is widely recognised for his expertise in complex urban systems, sustainable infrastructure design, and the integration of design thinking with policy, planning, and investment frameworks.

He has held senior leadership roles in both the public and private sectors, and has advised government agencies in the US, Australia. His work focuses on complex, city-shaping projects—ranging from aerotropolis master planning to transport-oriented development, sports and cultural districts, urban planning and social infrastructure—with a particular focus on place-based investment, environmental resilience, and civic identity.

At ANU, Associate Professor Maitless teaches sustainable infrastructure design, emphasising interdisciplinary collaboration, Indigenous knowledge, and systems thinking to capture long-term social and environmental impact. Grounded in both theory and practice, he is a frequent contributor to public discourse on the role of infrastructure in shaping equitable, liveable, and economically sustainable cities.

He is an experienced media spokesperson, with commentary featured in Esquire magazine, ABC Radio, the fifth estate, and in other industry and general interest publications. He brings clarity, context, and deep practical experience to public conversations on infrastructure transformation and urban futures.
