ANU grad and business leader appointed next Governor-General

ANU graduate and leading businesswoman Sam Mostyn AO has been announced as Australia’s next Governor-General by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

She is only the second woman to hold the prestigious role.

Ms Mostyn is not only a business leader but also one of Australia’s most respected advocates and voices for climate change action and gender equity.

She holds bachelor’s qualifications from ANU in arts and laws and started her professional career as an associate in the New South Wales supreme Court of Appeal. In 2018 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Laws by the University for her incredible service to the nation.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Genevieve Bell said Sam Mostyn represents the very best of ANU and the very best of Australia.

“She is a powerful voice on some of the most pressing issues we face as a nation. And she is an incredible, respected and effective leader in business and society,” she said.

“Here at the ANU we are so proud and delighted to see her appointed as Australia’s next Governor-General. Our community congratulates Sam on this well-deserved and wonderful recognition and honour.

“We know she will continue to serve all Australians with distinction and continue to make significant contributions that benefit our nation.

“Well done Sam!”

Ms Mostyn was appointed an officer of the Order of Australia in 2021 for distinguished service to business, the community and women.

In announcing the appointment – which was made by King Charles on the Prime Minister’s recommendation – Mr Albanese said Ms Mostyn is known for “her exceptional service to the Australian community” and “represents the best of modern Australia”.

“She is a businesswoman and community leader with a long history in executive and governance,” Mr Albanese said.

“I extend sincere congratulations and best wishes to Ms Mostyn on her appointment.”

Outgoing Governor-General David Hurley welcomed the appointment of Ms Mostyn as his successor.

“Ms Mostyn is someone who has dedicated her life to making positive change in our community,” he said.

“I have had the privilege of working with Ms Mostyn previously and know that she will represent and serve all Australians with distinction.

“I congratulate her on her appointment as our next Governor-General, look forward to spending time with her in coming months and, with all Australians, supporting her as our Governor-General.”

Ms Mostyn will commence Australia’s as 28th Governor-General in July.

Speaking to media on Wednesday about her appointment, Ms Mostyn said she was “deeply honoured by this great privilege”.

“[I] look forward to representing the values, hopes and aspirations of all Australian,” she said.

“I will never underestimate or take for granted the expectations that come with high office and I am ready to serve with integrity, compassion and respect.

“Millions of Australians know this to be true, that being of service is what often provides a person with their greatest happiness and sense of purpose.”
